Human resources departments are using new technologies and platforms to transform human resources. This includes embracing human resources information systems (HRIS). With the development of new tools and technologies, the role of human resources professionals is changing. It’s an exciting time to be working in human resources. Here are some ways digital HR technology is changing the role of human resources.

Employees Can Now Help Themselves

Before digital HR technology was available, employees visited human resources when they had questions. If they wanted to know how many vacation days they had left or had a question about their health benefits, they went to HR. If they needed to update the information in their employee files, like their addresses, HR would help them.

With HR technology, employees now have access to self-service portals. They can log in to the HR platform on their computers and help themselves. They can easily research their benefits coverage or find answers to other questions with the self-service portal. If they need to update their information, they can do so with the self-service portal, too. HR just needs to approve the changes later.

This new arrangement is beneficial for both employees and HR. For employees, self-service is very convenient. They can help themselves without even leaving their desks. For HR, self-service is a big time-saver. Instead of spending time helping employees with simple tasks, they can work on higher-level tasks.

Many HR Tasks Can Be Automated

In the past, HR professionals would rely on spreadsheets to perform their job tasks. With these spreadsheets, they’d manually approve time off, manage performance, and manage benefits, among other tasks. Using spreadsheets is much faster than managing tasks on paper, but now, HR professionals can complete basic tasks even more quickly.

With today’s HR technology, many HR tasks can be automated. For example, employee onboarding can now be automated. Forms can be automatically sent to new hires before they start work. Some parts of benefits administration can also be automated. For example, automation can track when employees are eligible to be enrolled in a benefits plan.

While many HR tasks can now be automated, that doesn’t mean robots are replacing HR professionals. HR professionals now have time to focus their skills on higher-level tasks at the company. For example, they can focus on helping the company grow with compensation management. They can also focus on creating wellness programs for employees to lower benefits costs.

Some Companies Are Embracing Artificial Intelligence

Artificial intelligence has many applications, and some companies are now using it in their HR departments. According to Deloitte, 33 percent of HR teams are using some form of artificial intelligence. There are many artificial intelligence solutions that HR teams are using.

One example is chatbots. Chatbots are programs that can talk intelligently through chat platforms. Employees can talk to the chatbots to learn about things like the company’s culture, the hiring process, or internal job opportunities. Adopting chatbots can help HR professionals become more efficient. Employees can get basic answers and advice from chatbots, and HR will have more time for other tasks.

Some companies are using AI to write their job descriptions. Based on discussions about jobs, the AI can create descriptions. This can save time for HR. Other companies are using AI to identify unconscious biases in recruiting. This can help prevent unconscious discrimination against job applicants based on gender, race, or age.

Get on Board with Digital HR

Times are changing in HR, and you should get on board. By making use of new tools and technologies, like an HRIS, you can save time, improve efficiency, and improve performance.
